How they found the time given all their other projects, we don’t know, but the talented members of Ela Charity Knit & Crochet recently donated 80 handmade red hats to the American Heart Association’s “Little Hats, Big Hearts” campaign.
The hats will be given to babies born in February at participating hospitals to bring awareness to heart disease and congenital heart defects.
Susan Fackler, director of Ela Township’s Community and Family Services, which oversees the Charity Knit & Crochet group, said their members happily participate in this event every year. This year, they knitted and crocheted more red hats than ever.
“We made 25 more this year,” Fackler said. “Our goal next year is 100 red hats.”
To date, Ela Charity Knit & Crochet has made and donated more than 5,000 blankets, hats, scarves, baby items and more for donations to area churches, homeless and domestic violence shelters, schools, hospitals and other nonprofit organizations and causes.
The group meets every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ela Township Community Center, 380 Surryse Rd., in Lake Zurich. Beginners are welcome and donations of yarn are always appreciated.
