With so much on our minds, and so many demands, it can be challenging to find time to experience meaningful relaxation.
If you’re feeling stressed or anxious and need a pick-me-up, Ela Township’s Community Family Services offers a unique class in guided meditation called Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra, which is free for township residents. Classes are held every Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the lower level of the township hall at 1155 E. Route 22, in Lake Zurich.
Participants are welcome to bring their own yoga mat and cushions or use those provided. All you have to do is lie down and listen as our licensed social worker Susan Fackler, who is certified in Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra, guides you to relax deeply at every level of your physical, mental and emotional being. This practice relaxes and calms the nervous system thus reducing anxiety, depression and stress. It can also improve your mood, help with sleep, increase energy and more.
Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra was created by yoga teacher Jennifer Reis, a faculty member at Kripalu School of Yoga in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. According to her website, just 20 minutes of Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra equates to three hours of sleep. Talk about a power nap!
“It’s good for whatever ails you. There are proven studies,” Fackler said.
Following a recent session, one participant said Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra puts him in a state of total relaxation that can be felt from head to toe, which really reduces stress.
“I carry a lot of stuff around in my head, things I have to do. (When I come to Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra) I just close my eyes and follow what Susan is saying,” he said.
