John Barrington
John and his wife live in Hawthorn Woods with their five children. They are members of the Chapel of Lake Zurich. John has been with Ela Township since 2005 and was elected Assessor in 2009. He was elected to a fourth term in April 2021.
John, who received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Eastern Illinois University with a minor in Political Science, is a Certified Illinois Assessment Officer with over 300 hours of education. He is responsible for the fair valuation of over 17,000 commercial, industrial, and residential properties with a market value in excess of $7 billion. He serves as President and Legislative Committee Chair for the Lake County Township Assessors Association and is a member of the International Association of Assessing Officers and the Illinois Assessors Association. He is also an Ela Township Precinct Committeeman and Vice Chairman.
Before joining the Ela Township Assessor’s Office, John served as a U.S. Navy Fleet Marine Force Corpsman, completing two tours of duty in Iraq and was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon among numerous other citations. John is a charter member of the Tri County Leathernecks Detachment of the Marine Corps League, a member of the Lake Zurich American Legion and VFW, and a member of the Lake Zurich Lions Club.
One of John’s main goals is to be a resource for Ela Township residents to help them understand the assessment and appeals process. He offers outreach sessions, public forums and is available for speaking engagements in an effort to help educate you, the taxpayer.
